Omar Rodriguez Calvo (* 1973 in Matanzas ) is a Cuban double bass player who has made a name for himself in the field of jazz .

Live and act

Rodriguez Calvo received a musical education as a child in his hometown. Even then he was playing in a band with Ramón Valle and the drummer Ernesto Simpson. Between 1988 and 1994 he studied double bass, electric bass , classical and popular music as well as jazz in Havana .

At the age of 17 he began to perform with Argelia Fragoso, later to play with Carlos Maza and since 1992 in the trio of Ramón Valle. In 1994 he moved to Hamburg. From there he worked with artists such as Joe Gallardo ( Latino Blue ), Nils Landgren , Julio Barreto , Horacio "El Negro" Hernández , Perico Sambeat , Roy Hargrove , Mike Stern , Leon Gurvitch , Gerardo Núñez , Chano Domínguez , Ulf Wakenius , Orange Blue , Wolf Kerschek , Anette Maiburg , Diego Piñera , the Classica Cubana formation and the hr-Bigband ( Parcifal Goes Habanna ).

The pianist Martin Tingvall brought him into the Tingvall Trio in 2003 , with whom he toured internationally. As a studio musician, he has also worked with Daniel Irigoyen, Jan Degenhardt , Wolf Biermann , Ilukan Y Su Tanda Mayor and Sandy Lacera.

Since 2017 he has been working with the internationally successful German jazz trio Triosence .

Prizes and awards

In 2009 Rodriguez Calvo and the Ensemble Classica Cubana received the German music award ECHO Klassik in the category “Classical music without borders”. With the Tingvall Trio 2010 he received an ECHO Jazz in the category “Ensemble of the year national”. In 2011 he was also awarded the Hamburg Music Prize HANS in the category "Hamburg Production of the Year" with the Tingvall Trio . In 2012 he received the ECHO Jazz with this trio in both the “National Ensemble of the Year” and “Live Act of the Year” category.
