Leon Gurvitch

Leon Gurvitch (* 1979 in Minsk ) is a Belarusian composer , pianist and conductor .

Live and act

Gurvitch studied oboe, conducting and classical piano at the music college in his native city; at the age of 19 he founded his first jazz band there. From 1993 to 2000 he played there at the Russian Drama Theater and in 1999 co-founded the Minsk Jazz Orchestra. Since 2001 he has been living freelance in Hamburg. In 2000 he founded the Leon Gurvitch Jazz Project , with which he introduced Klezmer in contemporary jazz arrangements , toured internationally and also presented himself at Jazzahead in 2013 . Between 2004 and 2006 he led the Hamburg big band The Openers . Since 2004 he has been a lecturer at the Johannes Brahms Conservatory in Hamburg , whose orchestra he has directed since 2007. In 2011 he conducted the world premiere of the dance opera Les Enfants Terribles by Phil Glass .

Gurvitch has written numerous compositions. His Sonata for oboe & piano was also performed at the Paris oboe festival . Young musicians from Germany, Russia and the Ukraine have performed his work 5 Dances in Old Style for string orchestra under the direction of Anna Skryleva in the German Federal Council, among others.

He also has with Vladimir Chekassin . Frank London , Carlos Bica , Omar Rodriguez Calvo , Nicolas Simion , Burhan Öçal , Wanja Slavin , Detlev Beier , Vladimir Karparov , Diego Piñera , Lucía Martínez Alonso and Paul Brody .

Prizes and awards

Gurvitch was awarded the international Golden Hanukkia Prize for Composition in Berlin in 2006 . In 2015 he was nominated for HANS - Der Hamburger Musikpreis in the category "Musician of the Year".
