Carlos Bica (born July 11, 1958 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese musician ( double bass , composition) of modern creative jazz .

Live and act

Bica studied in his hometown at the Academia de Amadores de Musica and at the National Conservatory . During his studies he was a member of the Orquestra de Câmara de Lisboa and represented Portugal at various international festivals. In 1982 he continued his studies at the University of Music in Würzburg . Since 1985 he has worked with the singer Maria João , on whose albums Conversa , Sol and Bom dia Benjamin he was involved. From 1989 he accompanied the fado singer Carlos do Carmo . He has lived in Berlin since 1994 .

With Frank Möbus and Jim Black he founded the Trio Azul , which has released six albums since 1996 and has toured internationally several times. At Expo 98 in Lisbon, Bica presented the song project Diz with actress and singer Ana Brandão, which crosses the boundaries between fado, chanson and theater song as well as between classical, jazz and improvisational music. He also played in the Trio of João Paulo and in the Trio Essencia with Gebhard Ullmann and Sylvie Courvoisier . He also developed a solo program and released his bass solo album Single in 2005 . He is also a member of Paul Brody's Tango Toy and performs with Sven Klammer and Kalle Kalima, as well as accompanying Kristiina Tuomi .

Bica continued to work with jazz musicians such as Ray Anderson , Lee Konitz , Kenny Wheeler , Aki Takase , Paolo Fresu , Julian Argüelles , Steve Argüelles , Matthias Schubert , Alexander von Schlippenbach , Ulrike Haage and Kurt Rosenwinkel .

Prizes and awards

His album Azul , recorded with Möbus and Black, was named "Jazz Album of the Year" in Portugal in 1996. In 1998 he was voted jazz musician of the year in Portugal.
