Peter Coleman Epstein (* 18th January 1967 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American jazz - saxophonist and university teachers .

Live and act

Epstein grew up in Portland; at the age of ten he first learned the clarinet before switching to the alto saxophone . Early mentors were singer Nancy King and bassist Glen Moore . In the California Institute of the Arts studied Epstein improvisation and composition , u. a. with Charlie Haden , James Newton and John Carter , he also worked on West African music and dance, Indian classical music and Balkan music. After graduating in 1992, he moved to New York City and formed a quartet with Jamie Saft , Chris Dahlgren and Jim Black ; In 1999, Staring at the Sun (MA Records) was his debut album as a band leader, after a solo album ( Solus 1998) had already been released. He has also worked with Ralph Alessi , James Carney , Jerry Granelli , Brad Shepik , David Tronzo , Marcelo Zarvos and Richard Woodson . In 2004 he received his Masters from the University of Nevada, Reno ; Epstein is there as an associate professor and head of the jazz department.
