Peter Delano

Peter Franklin Delano (born September 28, 1976 in New York City ) is an American jazz pianist and composer .

Peter Delano was considered a child prodigy at the beginning of his career in the 1990s. He came into contact with jazz through the music of Thelonious Monk , McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett ; at 12 he was the youngest participant in the New School Jazz Program . First he played for a short time in the jazz-rap formation Digable Planets and studied with Garry Dial from 1988 to 1990 ; In 1993 he graduated from Collegiate High School in Manhattan. He was discovered by Guy Eckstine, son of the big band leader and singer Billy Eckstine . In 1993 Delano was able to record his debut album with his own compositions for Verve , on which Gary Bartz , Michael Brecker , Tim Hagans , Ira Coleman , Jay Anderson and Lewis Nash participated.

After further courses and attending the New School, he began studying at Columbia University ; he also recorded a second album ( Biting for the Apple ) and a. with Gary Peacock . Delano has performed with musicians such as Chris Potter , Craig Handy , Dick Oatts , Joe Locke , Ray Mantilla , Eddie Gomez , Tomas Ulrich , Adam Nussbaum and Joe Chambers since 1988 , and as a soloist in the New York jazz club Blue Note . He also played as a sideman in the bands of Mark Whitfield and Dewey Redman , with whom he recorded material for an album in 1996 that was only released after Redman's death.

In 2004, Delano suffered a spinal cord injury that paralyzed his left foot and jeopardized his further musical career. After three years of rehabilitation, he went on tour again.
