John Diercks

John Diercks (born April 19, 1927 in Montclair , New Jersey , † April 2020 ) was an American composer and pianist.

Diercks studied at Oberlin College , the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester . His teachers were Bernard Rogers , Howard Hanson and Alan Hovhaness . This was followed by studies of Asian music with Dorothy Kahananui and Halla Huhm at the University of Hawaii .

From 1950 to 1954 Diercks taught piano at the College of Wooster , after which he began teaching at Hollins College in Virginia , which continued until 1990 . Here he taught composition and music theory and was head of the music department from 1962.

In addition to some church music choral works, Diercks composed mainly chamber music and numerous piano works.
