Martin William "Marty" Liquori (born September 11, 1949 in Montclair , New Jersey ) is a former American middle and long distance runner.

Life

Liquori attended Essex Catholic High School in Newark and undercut the four-minute mark in the mile run for the first time in his senior year of high school . He then moved to Villanova University , where he trained under the guidance of Jumbo Elliott . Elliott trained in the open air on an indoor wooden track in winter. As a result, his runners were able to hold their own in the hall, but were at increased risk of injury due to the many speed runs on hard ground. He qualified for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics at the age of 19 . There he reached the final of the 1,500 meter run , but only finished twelfth and last after an injury. In 1969 he won the mile run at the university championships and the state championships. 1971 won the mile run for the third time in a row at the university championships and won over 1500 meters at the Pan American Games . From 1972 to 1976 Liquori joined the International Track Association . But since he was often injured, he acted more as an announcer of professional athletics than as a runner. In 1977 he returned to world class for one more season. He improved the US national record in the 5,000-meter run twice that year ; the second improvement he achieved at the World Cup in Athletics in 1977 in Düsseldorf, when he came second behind Miruts Yifter .

After his sports career, Marty Liquori worked, among other things, as a sports commentator. He also appeared in this role in the 1986 film On the Edge . He also wrote a few books and appears as a jazz guitarist. In 1971 he was the founder of The Athlete Attic Footwear chain of stores.
