Thomas M. Salmon

Thomas M. Salmon (born July 28, 1963 in Bellows Falls , Vermont ) is an American politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 2007 to 2013 .

Life

Thomas M. Salmon was born in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School in 1981. He then studied at Boston College, where he earned his Bachelors of Science and then trained as a chartered accountant at Coopers and Lybrand in Hartford and Los Angeles . In 1993 he earned the professional title of Certified Public Accountant , then he worked in a small auditing company, first in California and later in Vermont .

While working as a chartered accountant, he trained as a teacher and taught children in Los Angeles. He moved back to Vermont in 2002.

After witnessing the effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he moved into politics. As a member of the Democratic Party of Vermont, he was elected State Auditor in 2006. In the first vote, incumbent Randy Brock led with 137 votes. However, Salmon requested a recount and on December 21, 2006, Salmon was declared the winner, by 102 votes. He won the elections in 2008 and 2010, but did not run again in 2012.

Salom is a member of the Vermont Society of CPAs, the American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants, and the Certified Fraud Examiners Association. He was also a member of the Rockingham Selectboard.

He served with the US Navy Reserves as a member of the Seabees and returned from active service in Iraq in March 2009. That year he switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party , believing that it had the better strategy to represent Vermont's economic interests. In November 2009, Salmon was caught drunk behind the wheel and imprisoned overnight. His blood alcohol level was 0.86 per mille, thus above the limit of 0.8 per mille in Vermont. In a later trial, he pleaded guilty and paid the fine. The incident occurred just before the first meeting of the Republican Party he had just entered.

Thomas M. Salmon and his wife Leslie have four children. The family lives in St. Johnsbury , Vermont. Thomas M. Salmon is the son of former Vermont Governor Thomas P. Salmon .
