Elizabeth M. Ready

Elizabeth Mary Ready , called Liz Ready (born October 7, 1953 in Burlington , Vermont ) is an American politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 2001 to 2005 .

Life

Ready was born in Burlington, Vermont and moved to Lincoln in 1976 . She attended school in Burlington and graduated from Rice Memorial High School. She then attended the University of Vermont and Burlington College. There she did a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She then studied public administration at Norwich University .

Ready spent seven years developing adult literacy in rural Addison County . She then served as a consultant for the Vermont Department of Education , initiated the Adult Diploma Program, and worked with the sixteen vocational training centers to design programs for adult students. In 1986, Ready joined Governor Madeleine M. Kunin's Office of Policy Research and Coordination . She founded the Addison County Community Trust in 1988, which creates affordable housing and is committed to preserving farmland and natural resources. Ready worked for the trust as a director for 12 years.

As a member of the Democratic Party of Vermont, Ready held various public offices. As an auditor , Town Planning Commissioner and Selectman in Lincoln and as a member of the Addison County Regional Planning Commission.

In 1988 Liz Ready was elected to the Vermont Senate. She won the next five re-elections by 2001. During her tenure as Senator, she served on the Natural Resources Committee for twelve years, including four years as chairman of the committee. She served on the Agriculture Committee for eight years and on the Appropriations Committee for six years. She also worked on the Joint Fiscal Committee for six years.

Liz Ready successfully ran for the office of Auditor of Accounts in 2000. She held this office from 2001 to 2005. After winning re-election in 2002, she was defeated in 2004 by Republican Party candidate Randy Brock .

This defeat was preceded by errors in her official biography during the election campaign in the Vermont Senate. It stated that Liz Ready had a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and a master's degree from Norwich University. However, both of these statements were incorrect. Ready holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Burlington College. This false information was also found in the commercial Marquis Who's Who and the State Yellow Book .

After her tenure ended, she became director of the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes, Vermont.
