Jedd P. Ladd

Jedd P. Ladd (born September 28, 1828 in North Hero , Vermont , † December 27, 1894 in Alburgh , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 1876 to 1878 .

Life

Jedediah Perkins Ladd was born in North Hero, Vermont to Abner Ladd (1800-1867) and Susan Kimball Whitney Ladd (1806-1891). His name is usually abbreviated to Jedd P. Ladd or Jed P. Ladd.

Ladd grew up in North Hero, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1858. He held various public offices, such as justice of the peace , town clerk , superintendent of schools and district attorney for Grand Isle County , for the probate court and as sheriff .

In 1863, Ladd moved to Alburgh, Vermont. During the Civil War he was in charge of recruiting in Grand Isle County. He also served in the military himself, first as captain and leader of a company that patrolled the border with Canada after the St. Albans incident , later as colonel and commander of the 1st Vermont Regiment .

A member of the Republican Party , Ladd was a member of the Vermont Senate from 1868 to 1869 and a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1874 to 1876 .

From 1876 to 1878 he was a Vermont State Auditor.

Ladd was married to Mary Hazen Ladd (1829-1906), the couple had one son who died in infancy. Ladd died in Alburgh on December 27, 1894. His grave is in North Heros Hyde Cemetery.
