Geographical location

Franklin is located in the north of Franklin County near the Canadian border , in the middle of the Green Mountains . In the center of the settlement lies the approximately 5 km² large Lake Carmi , which was a thorn in the side of the first settlers, and the Lake Carmi State Park located on it are now considered the tourist attractions of the place. Several small streams run through the town, they flow in a southerly direction and flow into the Lamoille River . The area is hilly, with no significant elevations, the highest being Gates Hill, 253 m high .

When it was founded in 1789 after the owner of the land, Jonathan Hunt, still known as Huntsburg , the residents of the village named their settlement Franklin after a vote in 1802 in order to increase the likelihood of becoming the administrative seat of the district, which was founded in 1792 and after the close Benjamin Franklin , who died two years earlier, had been named. The administrative seat was moved to St. Albans . Central Lake Carmi has also only had this name since a vote in 1920; previously it was known as Huntsburg Pond , later as Franklin Pond and from the end of the 19th century as Silver Lake . The Lake Carmi is named after Carmi Marsh, the builder of a great Civil War monument in the center.

The Vermont Route 120 runs north of Lake Carmi in west-east direction. In the west of Lake Carmi it turns south, in a north-westerly direction the Vermont Route 235 leads from this junction towards the Canadian border, in the east of the lake Vermont Route 236 also branches off in a south direction. There is no Amtrak station in Franklin. The next is in St. Albans.

The Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans is the closest hospital for residents of the Town.

education

Franklin is part of the Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union with Highgate, Sheldon and Swanton . The Franklin Central School caters for school classes from kindergarten through sixth grade.

The Haston Library goes back to Elvira S. Haston, who after her death in North Broofield, Massachusetts in 1906 left $ 12,297.16 in her estate from the Town of Franklin for building a library.
