Arthur Lloyd Thomas (born August 22, 1851 in Chicago , Illinois , † 1924 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American businessman and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Thomas grew up in Pittsburgh and later married Helena Reinberg. He held staff positions in the US House of Representatives before serving as Secretary of the Territory under Governors George W. Emery , Eli Houston Murray and Caleb Walton West for eight years. He was also a member of the Utah Commission . In April 1889, President Benjamin Harrison appointed him governor of the Utah Territory . Thomas seemed ambivalent about the Mormons , first favoring large dimensions through the Cullom Bill and later pardoning convicted polygamists . Two of his main concerns were to improve children's education and irrigation projects to open up more land for settlement. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for the office of first governor of Utah in 1895. After his tenure ended, Thomas served as the Salt Lake City Postmaster from 1898 to 1914. He also went on to pursue various ventures such as property development, mining, and publishing.
