Norman H. Bangerter
Norman Howard "Norm" Bangerter (born January 4, 1933 in Granger , Utah , † April 14, 2015 in Murray , Utah) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), who was governor of the state of Utah from 1985 to 1993 .
Early years
Bangerter attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah . He was a seasoned contractor in the housing and real estate development industries . He was also President of NHB Construction and Secretary at Dixie-Six Land Development . He was a Navy veteran from the Korean War . Bangerter served in the Utah Legislature for ten years from 1974 to 1984 . In 1980 he was elected Speaker in the Utah House of Representatives. He also worked there as Majority Leader and Assistant Majority Whip . In 1983 he was named one of the top ten MPs in the Republican Party.
Governor of Utah
Bangerter was elected governor of Utah against Democrat Wayne Owens in 1984 and was later re-elected. He held office from January 7, 1985 to January 3, 1993. The cornerstone of his tenure was a business-minded government focused on generating economic growth. Efforts have been made to attract new businesses to the state. In this context, he was an advocate for the newly founded Utah Technology Finance Corporation , which provided start-up funding for high-tech companies starting up. He also chaired the Western Governors' Association and the Interstate Oil Company Commission . He chose not to run for a third term and left in 1993.

He was President of the South Africa Johannesburg Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) from 1996 to 1999 . He was married to Colleen Bangerter. The couple had six children together and a foster son. The Utah State Route 154 , built between 1989 and 1998 and for the construction of which he campaigned, was named in 1998 as the " Bangerter Highway " after him.
