David Smith Monson (born June 20, 1945 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is a former American politician ( Republican Party ). He represented the state of Utah in the US House of Representatives and was its vice governor .

After attending public schools, David Monson received his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1970 . At this point he was already a member of the Utah Air National Guard , where he served as a sergeant until 1973 . He later passed the exam as a Certified Public Accountant .

In 1972, Monson was elected State Auditor to the Utah government; he was one of only two Republicans to win office at the state level in this Democratic year. After his four-year term expired, he applied for the post of Lieutenant Governor of Utah . With 275,605 votes, he prevailed against the Democrat David L. Duncan (210,801 votes). In 1980 he decided to re-elect Moroni Jensen with a lead of 132,000 votes.

In 1984, Monson ran for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives . The election result against the former Democratic State Senator Frances Farley was narrow; Monson ultimately won by 496 votes. After a term in Congress , he did not run for re-election in 1986; there had been no such case in Utah in decades. The reason was the lack of support from his own party, which internally classified him as a weak candidate. The set up for him Tom Shimizu lost significantly against the Democrat Wayne Owens .

Monson then retired from politics and focused on his professional activity in accounting.
