Bill Orton

William "Bill" Orton (born September 22, 1948 in North Ogden , Weber County , Utah , † April 18, 2009 in Juab County , Utah) was an American politician.

Orton studied at Brigham Young University , where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1973 and his Juris Doctor in 1979 . He was then admitted to the bar in the same year and practiced as a lawyer from 1980.

Orton was elected to the 102nd Congress in 1990 as a Democrat and represented the state of Utah in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1991 to January 3, 1997 . In the elections to the 105th Congress in 1996 he could not defend his seat and lost it to the Republican Chris Cannon . After leaving Congress, Orton began practicing law again. In 2000 he ran for governor of Utah. However, he could not prevail against the Republican incumbent Mike Leavitt .

Orton had an accident with his quad on April 18, 2009 and died of his injuries at the scene of the accident. He was married and had two sons. He had met his wife while serving as a congressman.
