James David "Jim" Matheson (born March 21, 1960 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Between 2001 and 2013 he represented the second constituency of the state of Utah in the US House of Representatives . From January 3, 2013 to January 3, 2015, he represented the fourth district of his state. He was most recently the only Utah Democrat in Congress .

Life

Jim Matheson is a son of Scott M. Matheson , who was Governor of Utah from 1977 to 1985 . He studied at Harvard University until 1982 and then at the University of California in Los Angeles until 1987 . He then worked for various companies in the energy sector. Later he founded his own consultancy, which dealt with energy issues. Matheson also dealt with environmental policy.

He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is married to Amy Matheson.

Political career

The Democratic Party nominated him in 2000 as their candidate for the US House of Representatives in Utah's second constituency. The then incumbent Republican Merrill Cook was very unpopular for his moodiness, which increased Matheson's chances of being elected. The Republicans then replaced Cook with Derek Smith. Nevertheless, Matheson was able to win the elections with 56% of the vote. This is all the more remarkable because at the same time Republican George W. Bush won 57% of the vote in the presidential election in this electoral area. Despite a reorganization of the constituency, which actually favored the Republicans, Jim Matheson managed to be re-elected in the following years. His last re-election was in 2012 against the Mayor of Saratoga Springs , Mia Love . In 2014 he decided not to run again; Love was elected to succeed him.

Positions

In Congress, Matheson was against raising the limit on new federal budget borrowing. He voted against draft budgets that did not help to reduce the budget deficit. In March 2007, he was one of 14 Democratic congressmen who voted against a bill that would bring American troops home from Iraq by September 1, 2008 . Matheson was a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee , the Committee on Science and Technology and in some sub-committees.
