Frank J. Cannon

Frank Jenne Cannon (* 25. January 1859 in Salt Lake City , Utah Territory ; † 25. July 1933 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . Between 1895 and 1896 he represented the Utah Territory in the US House of Representatives . From 1896 to 1899 he sat for the US state of Utah in the US Senate .

biography

Cannon was born as the eldest son of Sarah Jenne Cannon and George Q. Cannon in Salt Lake City, which was then part of the Utah Territory. He also went to school there. At the age of 19, he successfully graduated from the University of Deseret . In 1878 he married Martha Brown.

In 1891 he was one of the founding members of the Republican Party in what is now Utah. After an unsuccessful candidacy, he was sent from 1895 to 1896 as a delegate for the Utah Territory in the US House of Representatives. Shortly after the state of Utah was founded, Cannon was elected the first Class 1 Senator for a three-year term. He did not succeed in re-election.

After his political career, he worked as an editor for various newspapers in Utah. In his articles he opposed the Mormons , among others . Cannon died in Denver in 1933. There he spent the last years of his life. Among his descendants is the politician Chris Cannon .
