Robert William "Rob" Bishop (* 13. July 1951 in Kaysville , Davis County , Utah ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He has represented the state of Utah in the US House of Representatives since 2003 .

After graduating from Davis High School , Rob Bishop served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in Germany from 1970 to 1972 . After returning to the USA, he studied political science at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and graduated in 1974 with a bachelor's degree . He then worked from 1974 to 1980 as a civic education teacher at a high school in Brigham City , and later as a German teacher in Ogden .

Bishop's first political office was from 1979 to 1995 as a member of the Utah House of Representatives. There he was Chairman of the Republican parliamentary group ( Majority Leader ) and from 1992 to 1994, as successor to Craig Moody, the Speaker of the Chamber of Parliament. In 1997 he was elected chairman of his party in Utah for two years. He was temporarily active as a lobbyist in Washington ; after retiring from the state parliament, he returned to Brigham City High School, where he headed the history department.

In the 2002 congressional elections , Bishop was first elected to Congress . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. In parliament, he is one of the founding members of the Western State Coalition , which campaigns for more rights for the states. As a teacher he is particularly concerned with educational issues. He voted against the No Child Left Behind Act . Bishop is or was a member of the Rules Committee and the House Committee on Natural Resources . He heads or chaired its House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands . Bishop is also a member of several Congressional Caucuses . Among them is that of the tea party movement related Tea Party Caucus . He is also a member of the Republican study Committee .

In July 2019, Bishop announced that he would not run again in the 2020 congressional election.
