Elmer O. Leatherwood

Elmer O. Leatherwood (born September 4, 1872 in Pike County , Ohio , † December 24, 1929 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1929 he represented the second constituency of the state of Utah in the US House of Representatives .

Early Years and Rise in Utah

Elmer Leatherwood attended the public schools in his home country. In 1888 he moved to Emporia , Kansas . There he attended the Kansas State Normal School until 1894 . After studying law at the University of Wisconsin and being admitted to the bar, he began his new job in 1901 in Utah's capital, Salt Lake City . Between 1908 and 1916 he was a district attorney for the Utah Third Jurisdiction.

Leatherwood became a member of the Republican Party . In 1924 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where President Calvin Coolidge was nominated for another term. Leatherwood was also president of several mining companies at the time.

Congressman

In the 1920 congressional election, Elmer Leatherwood was elected to the US House of Representatives for Utah's second constituency. There he replaced James Henry Mays on March 4, 1921 . After he was confirmed in office in the following elections, Leatherwood remained in Congress until his death in 1929 . At times he was chairman of the committee to control expenditure on public buildings.
