Christopher Black Cannon (born October 20, 1950 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2009 he represented the third constituency of the state of Utah in the US House of Representatives .

Origin and career

Chris Cannon comes from a politically prominent family in Utah. His brother Joe was chairman of the Republican Party in Utah. His great-grandfather George Q. Cannon represented the Utah Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives between 1873 and 1882 . Former US Senator Frank J. Cannon is also one of his relatives. Chris Cannon attended Brigham Young University until 1974 and then until 1975 the Harvard School of Business at Harvard University. This was followed by a law degree, which he completed again until 1980 at Brigham Young University. Between 1980 and 1996 he worked as a lawyer and businessman. He became a millionaire. He also served as a lawyer for the Home Office between 1983 and 1986, and served as Republican Treasurer in Utah from 1992 to 1994.

Congressman

In 1996 Chris Cannon was elected to the US House of Representatives in the Utah Third Constituency. There he replaced the Democrat Bill Orton on January 3, 1997 , whom he had beaten in the election. In the following elections he was confirmed in his office, so that between January 3, 1997 and January 3, 2009 he could complete a total of six legislative terms in Congress . When he was re-elected, he always achieved absolute majorities between 58% and 77% of the votes.

In 1999 he was a prosecutor on the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton . He was a member of the Government Reform Committee and several subcommittees. In the run-up to the 2008 congressional elections, Cannon lost his party's primary election to Jason Chaffetz . His time in Congress has not been entirely free of controversy, either. For example, his commitment to his brother and his business interests in 2006 was controversial. In 2008, he unsuccessfully tried to accuse the Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama that his memoirs had not been written by him.

Chris Cannon is married to Claudia Ann Fox.
