Mia Love
Ludmya "Mia" Bourdeau Love (born December 6, 1975 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . She was a member of the United States House of Representatives for Utah's 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019 and was the first black Republican woman and the first person of Haitian descent in Congress .
Life
Mia Love was born to Haitian parents in Brooklyn, New York. The parents both immigrated to the United States in 1974. She studied performing arts at the University of Hartford in Connecticut . She moved to Utah , converted from Catholic to Mormon, and married former missionary Jason Love.
Political career
Love was elected to the Saratoga Springs Parish Council in 2003 . In 2009 she became mayor of the city. She was the Republican candidate for the fourth constituency of Utah in the 2012 election , but with a share of 48.5 against 48.8 percent of the vote was extremely narrowly defeated by the previous holder of the Democratic office, Jim Matheson . After Matheson decided not to run again, she won the now vacant seat in the 2014 election . She won re-election in 2016 in the district that includes the southern suburbs of Salt Lake City .
Love was traded as the future star of her party and stood for their reaction to the greater diversification of society. She was the only Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus and distanced herself from Donald Trump in the 2016 election campaign by not appearing at the Republican National Convention and Trump after the Access Hollywood affair ("Pussygate") and after his comment that developing countries like Among other things, her country of origin, Haiti, was criticized as being “shithole countries” as racist.
In the 2018 election , Democrat Ben McAdams ran against them. In the generally favorable mid-term elections for the Democrats after President Trump's victory in 2016, McAdams, the popular former mayor of Salt Lake County , was considered a serious challenger to Love. She was the only woman in office from Utah at risk, especially since Trump received only 39 percent of the vote in the district's presidential election (Clinton 32 percent, the rest went to the independent Evan McMullin ). Similarly high donations and a narrow lead in the polls, Loves indicated a narrow choice, so that many observers rate it as completely open.
In September 2018, Love agreed to donate a portion of the $ 1.15 million in donations from her campaign to the Federal Election Commission . Her election campaign had declared the proceeds as donations for a potential primary in violation of the statutory upper limits , although she had already received the nomination in a party meeting at the end of April 2018, no opposing candidate was apparent and she had not made any preparations for a primary. The progressive non-profit organization Alliance for a Better Utah then filed a complaint against Love, while McAdams accused her of having exploited the rules unfairly to her advantage ("gaming the system").
McAdams defeated Love with 50.1 to 49.9 percent of the vote, which was only certain after two weeks of counting and a court order. President Trump had already said on election night, when McAdams narrowly led, that Love had shown Trump "no love" and therefore lost. She left the Congress on January 3, 2019. In her declaration of defeat, Love said Trump was incapable of relationships, only convenient transactions. That is not enough for politics. You will not withdraw from the public.
