On August 8, 2016, McMullin announced that he would run for the office of President of the United States in the November 8 election. Due to the late candidacy, he missed the registration dates in various states .

McMullin justified his candidacy with the Americans' lack of confidence in the official candidates of the two major parties, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump . He offers himself as an alternative for millions of dissatisfied conservative voters.

At the beginning of October, McMullin chose the 35-year-old businesswoman and media strategist Mindy Finn as running mate for the presidential election, i.e. as a supporter in the election campaign and candidate for the office of vice president .

McMullin's main goal was to prevent Trump from being president of the United States. He focused his election campaign on his home state of Utah , a Mormon and traditionally conservative state and therefore leaning towards the Republicans. In the second half of October, he was roughly on a par with the Republican candidate in polls. With a victory, he could have stolen six electors from Trump and, if the outcome was tight, he could even have been president by voting in the House of Representatives . Ultimately, however, he received only 20.4 percent of the vote in Utah; Trump came to 46.8 percent and won a majority of electors nationwide. McMullin was able to win a total of 731,788 votes (0.54 percent) and thus the fifth most of all candidates. However , he did not receive any votes in the Electoral College . He later described Trump as a threat to the US constitution and called for bipartisan opposition in the New York Times .
