history

As early as 1774, the governor of Virginia , John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore , discovered on his way back from the Indian territories of today's Ohio along the Hocking River the area where the western end of Nelsonville is today. A log cabin was built here around 1810, which probably served as a shelter for hunters.

Daniel Nelson

In August 1814, Daniel Nelson and his wife Sarah Smith Nelson from Shrewsbury , Massachusetts bought the land on which the city later named after him was built. In June 1818 Nelson marked out 57 building plots, which he made available to found the city. In 1821 there were already seven houses. In 1823 Nelson donated a piece of land for the school, one for the cemetery and one for the market square. The first streets were Columbus and Mulberry Streets, later renamed Washington Street.

Around 1820 Daniel Nelson built a larger log house which he lived in with his family. Daniel and Sarah Nelson had a total of 12 children, but one had died on the Massachusetts-Ohio trek and was buried in Marietta . When the log cabin became too small for the family again, it was moved to the school lot on Columbus Street and served as a school. The house has survived to this day and is now on Fayette Street after two more moves.

Urban development

The first mill was built by Josiah Coe in 1816, which later became the Robbins Mill. Samual Robbins first founded a tannery in 1825. Thomas Thompson opened the first local inn around 1820. In 1822, James Knight became the first shop owner.

Nelsonville became its own parish in 1838 and Charles Cable was the first mayor. In 1849 the Cables opened the Cable Store. The first bank was the Merchants and Miners Bank , founded in 1873. Already in 1846, one was a Freemason - Lodge founded in Nelsonville.

education

The first elementary school was founded in 1865 and operated until 1960. The current East Elementary School followed in 1874 and was demolished in 1959. The West Elementary School was established in 1891 and demolished in 1971. The Junior High School dates back to 1907. The original Junior High School and Nelsonville High School still exist and are located on Fayette Street, a few blocks from the center.
