Cinavia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cinavia (also Verance Copy Management System for Audiovisual Content , VCMS / AV for short ) is a copy lock that was developed by Verance and has been part of the AACS DRM system since 2009 , which is used with recordable and pre-recorded optical media.

Cinavia is based on an analog watermark , which is mixed into the audio track of the video file. There are two variants here. The first variant is intended to prevent the playback of films recorded at a cinema show and burned on a Blu-ray Disc (BD). In this case the watermark contains the information that a film is only intended for a cinema showing. If such a film is played on a private BD player , the copy protection system detects an error . After ten minutes the sound or the entire picture is switched off. The second variant of the watermark is used to detect unlawful copies of a BD itself. When an unlawful copy of a BD is made, the AACS copy protection is removed while the watermark is retained. If such a copy is burned back onto a BD and then played back, the BD player checks during media playback when it detects the watermark whether the disc being played contains valid AACS keys. If the disc is unprotected despite the presence of the watermark, it cannot be original and the picture or sound is switched off again after ten minutes.

Since February 1, 2012, all current BD players must be able to recognize the watermark in accordance with the AACS contract conditions. Old devices and playback software are not yet affected by this copy lock . The watermark itself is very robust and remains recognizable even after transcoding .
