Enduring Love (Alternative title: Liebeswahn - Enduring Love ) is an Irish - British stalker drama directed by Roger Michell from 2004 . The script was written by Joe Penhall based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Ian McEwan .

action

Joe and Claire live in Oxford . Joe is a philosophy professor and his girlfriend Claire is an artist. On a sunny day, the two of them set off for a picnic in the countryside. When Joe is about to propose to Claire, a hot air balloon appears over the meadow . The basket of the balloon rudely touches down on the meadow, so that the balloonist is thrown out of the basket. The balloonist's grandson is left alone in the basket of the balloon. Joe rushes to help, as well as a passing country doctor and two other helpers. Together they try to keep the basket on the ground. They seem to succeed at first. But the rapid wind lifts the balloon into the air again. Four of the men cling to the basket while the doctor is lifted into the air by the balloon tether. The four men finally drop from the basket from a height of a few meters back to the earth. Only the doctor persistently holds on to the tether until he finally loses his strength, falls to the ground and dies.

Joe is tormented by remorse that he was the first to let go of the basket and was therefore responsible for the doctor's death. As he withdraws more and more, his relationship with Claire begins to suffer from his emotions. One day Jed, one of the men involved in the unsuccessful rescue attempt, contacts Joe. Jed firmly believes that the tragedy has made him inextricably linked with Joe. What starts out as annoying stalking grows over time into a pathological mania for love .

The relationship between Joe and Claire eventually falls apart. Jed goes shopping for Joe, waits in front of his apartment and finally attends one of his lectures. Then Joe goes on the offensive and penetrates Jed's apartment. There he finds a wall with photos and newspaper articles of himself. He realizes how morbid Jed's mad love is.

But instead of staying away from Joe, Jed fears that he could lose Joe to Claire forever. So he visits Claire to tell her about his alleged affair with Joe. Joe joins them and denies Jed's portrayal. Every man deliriously grabs a kitchen knife and rams it in Claire's stomach so he and Joe can be together from now on. Joe manages to lure Jed to him with the gun, only to stab him in the stomach as well. He drops Jed on the floor bleeding and rushes over to Claire to help her and call an ambulance.

To process what happened, Joe meets again with Claire on the meadow where they had the fateful encounter with the hot air balloon. Joe still wants to propose to Claire to win her back, but Claire cuts him off and asks him not to say anything else. So they sit side by side in silence.

Meanwhile, Jed has been taken to a psychiatric hospital.

reception

The film is an "enigmatic film adaptation" and "perfidious tied psycho- pack " , which according to the judgment of Cinema could assert itself "quite well" "in the tradition of stalker films from" Fatal Affair "to" Cable Guy "" . The two protagonists are also praised. It is said: "The steely James Bond convinces as an insecure intellectual, Rhys Ifans as one of those contemporaries whom you want to avoid straight away."

The kino.de editorial team is of the opinion that the film is “powerfully cast” and represents a “hypnotic and enigmatic meditation on the strange paths of love and its frightening excesses” . The film begins with a “bang,” and it is well cast with the “electrifying” Samantha Morton. The “traumatic survival experience” of the balloon accident that connects the strangers is said to be “of religious intensity” that takes hold of Joe, becomes his “obsession” and induces him to research the background of the casualty. The film is gradually developing "away from the existential self-discovery drama towards a harrowing stalker thriller" and transforms itself "in a sequence of shocking scenes into its nemesis" . The film comes up with “expressive, always exciting images” . The conclusion is: “This gripping essay about misunderstood and misguided love [is] a force that only films develop that dare to do something, even if they accept that they will not be able to compete with» Spider-Man «and Co. . Just because of the courageous structure and the irresistible Daniel Craig, who is not only physically naked, this razor-sharp experimental thriller is absolutely worth seeing. "

On film tips it is said that the film shows "in slow pictures the decay" of the protagonist after the unsuccessful rescue attempt. In addition to the “slightly lethargic images” , “the mood of the opening scene” , which “is retained throughout the film” , “means that there is no tension in the conventional sense” . All in all, the film is “quite unsurprising” . According to film tips, "extremely calm camera positions that stand in contrast to the inner restlessness of the main character predominate" . The "unusual" love story "is packaged in a very idiosyncratic film" . In conclusion, it says: "For a thriller lacking suspense, drama Friends likely the depth miss, the characters seem unreal, caught in the lethargy or as Jed completely from the roll." Nevertheless, could the film a "cinematic experience of a special kind" are , if you get involved with him, for which he received seven out of ten points.

At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received mixed to positive reviews and achieved a rating of 59%.
