Andrew Lincoln (* 14. September 1973 in London as Andrew James Clutterbuck ) is a British actor , director and spokesman .

Life and family

Lincoln was born in London but spent the first years of his life in Kingston upon Hull . His mother was a South African nurse and his father was an English civil engineer. At the age of 10 he moved with his family to Bath , where he attended the Beechen Cliff School . It was at this school that Lincoln first came into contact with acting. At the age of 14 he made his stage debut and played a leading role in the play Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens . During the summer vacation, Lincoln worked at the renowned National Youth Theater in London, where well-known actors such as Anthony Hopkins , Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ralph Fiennes have performed. He then graduated from the popular Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and while studying at RADA he changed his last name to Lincoln.

On June 10, 2006 Lincoln married Gael Anderson, the daughter of the Scottish flautist and singer Ian Anderson ( Jethro Tull ). The couple have two children. His older brother Richard Clutterbuck first ran the Bristol Free School before taking over the leadership of Kings Oak Academy in Kingswood.

Career

Andrew Lincoln has appeared repeatedly in various theaters and dramas, for example at the Royal National Theater , where he was last seen in 2013 in a play with Bill Nighy . He played in plays by Jez Butterworth , Jonathan Harvey and Sam Shepard, among others .

Since 1994 Andrew Lincoln has made a career in film and television in addition to the theater. His first TV role was a guest appearance on the British comedy series Drop the Dead Donkey . This was followed by a leading and supporting role in two films and, after further appearances, the leading role of Edgar Cook in the English drama series This Life , which he played from 1996 to 1997. In 1999 and 2000 he took on two supporting roles in the films Human Traffic and Gangster No. 1 . From 2001 to 2003 he played the lead role of Simon Casey in the television series Teachers , which he also directed. For this work he was first nominated for the British Academy Television Award . In 2003, he also turned his internationally best-known film, the romantic comedy Indeed ... Love , in which he beside Hugh Grant , Liam Neeson , Colin Firth and Keira Knightley the role of Mark personified. In 2004 he took on another supporting role in the Irish-British drama Enduring Love . He was then seen for two seasons in the series Afterlife , which earned him an award with the Golden Nymph . Shortly thereafter, he appeared in the films These Foolish Things (2005), Scenes of a Sexual Nature (2006), The Pro (2008), Sturmhöhe - Wuthering Heights and Moonshot - The flight of Apollo 11 (both 2009). In 2010 he appeared in the television series Strike Back as well as in the films The Order Over and We Want Sex . In addition to being an actor, Lincoln has also worked as a spokesperson for British radio and television and as a voice actor .

From 2010 to 2018, Lincoln played the lead role of Rick Grimes in the zombie series The Walking Dead , which made him famous worldwide. For this role he received the Saturn Award in 2015 and 2017 , for which he was also nominated in 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2018. In May 2018, the series veteran stated that for private reasons he no longer wanted to participate in the series after the ninth season.

Trivia

The last name Lincoln is just the stage name, while Andrew Clutterbuck never dropped his real last name. The stage name came about when his first agent said that "Clutterbuck" would sound like the name of a hobbit . He himself finds the change practical, as it helps to protect his privacy. The name Clutterbuck is even on his credit card.
