The National Naval Medical Center or Bethesda Naval Hospital is the premier medical facility in the United States Navy . Dental and human research as well as medical care for marines and government officials (including the US President and his family) take place there.
The NNMC is located in Bethesda , Maryland , near Washington, DC
history
The then President Franklin D. Roosevelt chose the site for the NNMC in 1938 . He also laid the foundation stone for the naval hospital on November 11, 1940, which was originally intended to hold 1200 beds. In addition, the medical center at that time included the Naval Medical School , the Naval Dental School (now the National Naval Dental Center ) and the Naval Medical Research Institute . After the end of the Second World War , temporary extensions to the building made space for a total of 2,464 patients - mostly wounded soldiers of the Navy and Marines .
From August 1960 to summer 1963 the hospital was expanded. The $ 5.6 million construction project envisaged the addition of two five-story wings to the east side of the main building to replace temporary World War II buildings.
After the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy , Kennedy's autopsy was performed in November 1963 at the NNMC . After the assassination, Kennedy was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital , where his death was determined. The doctors and coroner rightly requested that the autopsy be done by himself, as it was a Dallas County murder . Despite the facts, the Secret Service prevailed: Kennedy's body was brought to Washington by Air Force One and finally autopsied on the evening of November 22, 1963 at Bethesda Naval Hospital.
In 1975 the facility was extensively modernized. Among other things, two more buildings with a total area of 82,000 m² were built.
In 1979, the last temporary buildings from the Second World War were replaced by a multi-storey staff car park. This expansion made the NNMC one of the largest medical institutions in the country.
On August 25, 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure Committee recommended that the Walter Reed Military Hospital be closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Program 2005 and merged with the NNMC. By expanding the Bethesda Naval Hospital, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is to be created, a modern cross-armed forces hospital.
