Nicolau Manent i Maurant

Nicolau Manent i Maurant (born June 22, 1827 in Maó ( Menorca ), † May 11, 1887 in Barcelona ) was a Menorcan organist , conductor and composer, especially of sacred works and of Spanish and Catalan-speaking tzarzuelas .

life and work

Nicolau Manent began studying music at the age of five with Benet Andreu i Pons. In 1836 he joined the orchestra of the Teatre Principal de Maó as a flutist and double bass player . At the age of twelve he wrote his first musical works.

In 1842 he took up the position of organist in the parish of Sant Francesc de Maó . In 1845 he moved to Barcelona and studied with Mateu Ferrer . He joined the Liceu Orchestra as a double bass player there in 1847 . From 1851 he worked as Kapellmeister in the Barcelona church of Sant Jaume . He held this position until his death. Here he created numerous, highly valued sacred compositions. At the Teatre Circo he directed several opera and zarzuela seasons. He also devoted himself intensively to music education.

Nicolau Manent emerged as a composer of numerous sacred works, as well as orchestral and stage works. Above all, he stood out as a composer of lyrical theater works and ballets. He also wrote the didactic work Método teórico-práctico musical (between 1850 and 1860).

Nicolau Manent's students at the Escolania de Sant Jaume in Barcelona included Josep Rodoreda , the creator of the Virolai de Montserrat , and Climent Baixas .
