Josep Rodoreda i Santigós

Josep Rodoreda i Santigós (born February 13, 1851 in Barcelona , † October 9, 1922 in Buenos Aires ) was a Catalan composer , conductor and music teacher . Rodoreda was the composer of the Marian hymn El Virolai de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat , which is popularly known simply as El Virolai . This hymn was used as the unofficial Catalan national anthem in times of repression.

life and work

Josep Rodoreda received his musical training at the Escolania de Sant Jaume in Barcelona under the direction of Nicolau Manent .

In 1875 he was appointed professor for piano accompaniment at the Conservatori del Liceu . He gave up this position in 1883 because he founded the Acadèmia de Música de la Casa Provincial de la Caritat in Barcelona, ​​of which he became director. After the death of Josep Anselm Clavé in 1874, he also directed the Societat Coral Euterpe and took over Clavé's duties as choirmaster. In 1886 he founded the Banda Municipal de Barcelona and became its artistic director. He became the director of the Escola Municipal de Música , the first public music education facility in Barcelona. In 1896 he gave up all positions in Barcelona and went to San Sebastian as director of the Banda Municipal (Municipal Music Band) and the Escola Municipal de Música (Municipal Music School) . In 1902 he moved to Buenos Aires and headed the Thibaud-Piazzini Conservatory there . At the same time he held the chair for harmony and composition at this conservatory. In Buenos Aires he founded the Argentine Orfeó Català .

He became known as a composer, among other things, for his oratorio Les set paraules (1875). The work that made him famous was the Marian hymn El Virolai de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat . The text of this hymn is by Jacint Verdaguer . In San Sebastian he composed some pieces that were particularly influenced by Basque folk music. Other pieces from his compositional work are the orchestral works Poema fantàstic (1875) and La Primavera (1883, The Spring), the dramatic idyll La nit al bosc (The Night in the Forest) based on a text by Apel·les Mestres , songs and numerous pieces for marching bands. Rodoreda wrote about 300 compositions.
