Roy Brooks
Roy Brooks (* 3. September 1938 in Detroit ; † 16th November 2005 ) was an American drummer of modern jazz .
Live and act
Roy Brooks began his musical career at the age of 14 in local rhythm and blues groups. He first played with Yusef Lateef , Barry Harris and Joe Henderson , before becoming a member of the Horace Silver Quintet in 1959 , of which he was a member until 1964. He then worked freelance at Chet Baker , Junior Cook and Blue Mitchell . From 1967 to 1970 he played again with Lateef, then from 1970 to 1972 with Pharoah Sanders and James Moody . He also made recordings and tours with Shirley Scott , Wes Montgomery , Sonny Stitt , Jackie McLean , Dexter Gordon , Red Garland , Abdullah Ibrahim , Charles McPherson , Red Rodney and in 1972/73 with Charles Mingus , with whom he took part on his European tour. Brooks also founded a percussion ensemble called The Artistic Truth and the formation The Aboriginal Percussion Choir ; Brooks was also a long time member of Max Roach's percussion band , M'Boom . In the 1980s a solo album was created for the Enja record label ; Brooks played with Woody Shaw on his album Bemsha Swing Live in 1986 . He performed primarily as a percussionist in the 1990s before illness and prison sentences prevented him from performing in public.
