Live and act

Hastings began playing in local bands in Surrey from 1942; during the Second World War he was a member of a military band. After the war he jammed with Nevil Skrimshire , then worked for Freddy Randall (1950-54) and Alex Welsh (1954-57), followed by engagements in local combos. In Düsseldorf he led an ensemble in 1957 and again in 1959/60, then played briefly with Nat Gonella before returning to Welsh for a decade. He also worked on recordings of Earl Hines , Rex Stewart , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Ben Webster and Bill Coleman . In 1972 he left Welsh's band for health reasons and founded his own short-lived formation in which Nick Stevenson (trumpet), Ron Brown (trombone), Malcolm Everson (clarinet / baritone saxophone), Martin Taylor (guitar), Jamie Evans (piano) and Peter Skivington (bass) played. At the end of the 1970s, recordings were made with Brian Lemon , Stan Greig , Dave Shepherd and Fred Hunt . In his later years he played at London's Pizza Express Club and toured with Wild Bill Davison and Ruby Braff . Shortly before his death from a stroke in February 1978 he led his own quartet.
