Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings are a British rhythm and blues , blues and blues-rock group founded in 1995 by Bill Wyman , former bassist for the Rolling Stones .
Band history
After leaving the Rolling Stones, Wyman rarely picked up the bass for two years and instead devoted himself to other projects such as book writing and photography. At the end of 1995 he felt a desire to make music again, but not a commercial one: he decided to return to his musical roots. Wyman started jamming at home with Terry Taylor and the idea of playing with multiple artists soon came up. Wyman contacted Georgie Fame , guitarists Albert Lee , Peter Frampton , Andy Fairweather-Low, and pianist Gary Brooker . Fairweather-Low and Brooker had already played with Wyman in his band Willie and the Poor Boys in the late 1980s. They were supplemented by the pianist David Hartley , the singer Beverley Skeete and the guitarist Martin Taylor . Bill Wyman says of the working style:
"We began to record anything that came to mind. The benefit of working in this way - apart form the spontaneous atmosphere we created, was that I could pick and chose musicians for the particular style I wanted for each track."
“We started taking in everything that came to mind. The good thing about this style of work, aside from the spontaneous atmosphere, was that I was able to choose the musicians who fit the particular style I wanted for a number. "
The result of this work was the Rhythm Kings ' debut album Struttin' Our Stuff . Soon the band began performing live in smaller clubs in Northern Europe. Since then, the Rhythm Kings have gained a wide following on their tours in Europe and also toured the USA in 2001, which remains their only US tour to this day. A critic expresses the strength of the band in the following words:
"First-class musicians, who no longer have to prove anything to anyone, play classic rock songs from Chuck Berry to Clifton Chenier to Screaming Jay Hawkins, complement each other in perfect harmony, constantly alternate between singing and instrumental solo passages, and clearly have fun with each other."
Band members
Bill Wyman says of his intentions:
"The idea behind the Rhythm Kings was always that it should be a fluid group, allowing for different people to play together, both on record and on stage."
"The idea behind the Rhythm Kings was always that it should be a permeable group that would allow different people to play together on records and on stage."
