Ray Cooper (born August 19, 1942 in Watford , Hertfordshire ) is an English percussionist . He has worked as a studio and live musician with bands and artists such as Pink Floyd , the Rolling Stones , Sting , Phil Collins , George Harrison , Eric Clapton , Peter Maffay and Elton John .

Career

Cooper's career began in the 1960s with the recording of the band The Who . This was followed by productions with Carly Simon , David Essex and Blue Mink . He became known through his collaboration with Elton John, where he appeared on almost all albums from the 1970s. At the Live Aid concert in 1985 he was also a member of the band. On November 29, 2002 he took part as a musician and co-producer at the memorial concert for his friend George Harrison . In 2009 Cooper worked with Peter Maffay , and again with Elton John in 2010 . In 2017 Cooper starred in the Peter Maffay MTV Unplugged production. Since September 2018 he has been accompanying Elton John on his farewell tour again.

  • In addition to his music career, he also appeared as a supporting actor in several films. So he is u. a. seen in films by Terry Gilliam .
  • In Albert Dupontel's comedy film 9 mois ferme , Cooper was seen in a cameo as a news anchor in 2013.
  • His eccentric, at times freaky appearance on stage earned him the nickname " Mad Ray Cooper ".
