Donald Worster

Donald E. Worster (* 1941 ) is an American historian who teaches and researches in the fields of environmental history and the history of the American West.

Worster graduated from the University of Kansas in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts and 1964 with a Master of Arts. He continued his studies at Yale University , where he received a Master of Philosophy in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. From 1989 he taught and researched as Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Professor of US History in the Department of History at the University of Kansas. Worster is considered one of the founders of American environmental history.

After his retirement he teaches at the Chinese People's University in Beijing and has already been twice a fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society in Munich.

Worster was appointed to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009 and three of his books have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize . In 1980 he received the Bancroft Prize for his book Dust Bowl: The Southern Plains in the 1930s and in 2002 he was awarded the Henry Adams Prize for his biography of John Wesley Powell . Worster received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981. Illinois Wesleyan University and the University of Stirling awarded him honorary doctorates.
