Eleanor Mary Simmonds (born November 11, 1994 in Walsall , Great Britain ) is an English Paralympic swimmer who won several gold medals at Paralympic Games and other successes at international championships. She was born with achondroplasia , a genetically determined form of short stature .

Simmonds became internationally known for her participation in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing , where she won two gold medals as the youngest participant in her team at the age of 13. At the Summer Paralympics 2012 in London , she competed again and won two gold medals again, and she also set the world record in the 400-meter freestyle. Simmonds was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) on New Year 2013 for her services to Paralympic sport .

Life

Eleanor Mary Simmonds was born in Walsall , England and grew up in Aldridge , where she attended Aldridge Primary School. She later moved to the Olchfa School in Swansea . Simmonds began swimming at the age of five and swam at the Boldmere Swimming Club in Sutton Coldfield, trained by Ashley Cox. When she was eleven, she moved to Swansea with her mother and continued training there.

Successes at the Paralympics

Eleanor Simmonds first took part in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing , where she won two gold medals in the 100 meter freestyle S6 and 400 meter freestyle S6 competitions. In addition to the freestyle competitions, she also took part in the 50 meter butterfly and 200 meter medley swimming competitions.

At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London , she won two gold medals again, this time in the 400 meter freestyle S6 and 200 meter freestyle S6 competitions, as well as a silver medal in the 100 meter freestyle S6 competition and a bronze medal in the 50 meter freestyle S6 competition. In addition, she set the world record in the 400-meter freestyle.

More Achievements

In addition to the national successes and the participation and successes at the Paralympic Games, Eleanor Simmonds is a successful swimmer at the IPC Swimming World Championships , the IPC European Championships and the Paralympic World Cup and has won numerous medals.

In 2008 she was awarded the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
