Lucia Azzolina (born August 25, 1982 in Syracuse ) is an Italian politician and teacher.

She belongs to the five-star movement and has been Minister for Education in the Conte II cabinet since January 10, 2020 .

Life

After attending the Liceo Scientifico Leonardo da Vinci in Floridia in Sicily , Lucia Azzolina studied at the University of Catania philosophy , which she graduated of 2004. She then specialized in the history of philosophy . After completing her studies, she successfully attended the state specialization school for teaching at secondary schools ( Italian Scuola di specializzazione all'insegnamento secondario ) to teach philosophy and history.

In 2008 she went to Liguria to teach in various high schools in La Spezia and Sarzana . In addition to her professional activity she visited in Pisa a training course, to be able to teach disabled, and then enrolled at the University of Pavia in order Schulrecht study.

After successfully completing her second degree, she was accepted into the civil service as a teacher at the Quintino Sella secondary school in Biella in January 2014 , but took a leave of absence to complete her legal clerkship. At the same time, she worked as a trade union representative for ANIEF at various schools in Piedmont and Lombardy . In 2017, she withdrew from the union to start teaching at the school in Biella. After successfully completing a public selection process, Lucia Azzolina was appointed to the school management in May 2019.

Her political career began in 2018 when she ran for the Chamber of Deputies for the 5-star movement in the parliamentary elections in March 2018 in the constituency of Piedmont 2 and came second on the list as the most elected candidate. After her election as a member of parliament, she dealt with school issues in the relevant parliamentary commission. On September 16, 2019, she was appointed Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research in the Conte II cabinet . After Lorenzo Fioramonti's resignation and the division of the Ministry into the Ministries of Education and Universities and Research, Lucia Azzolina was sworn in as Minister of Education on January 10, 2020.

The day after Azzolina was sworn in, the newspaper La Repubblica reported that the new minister responsible for schools copied parts of her thesis at the state specialization school for teaching from manuals in 2010. According to the linguist Massimo Arcangeli , about half of the first three pages of the work are plagiarism. Azzolina said it was neither a thesis, but an internship report, nor plagiarism. Further, she did not comment on the allegations and remained in office despite the Lega's request for resignation.
