Luzia Katharina Bernhardine Uptmoor , called Luzie Uptmoor , occasionally also written Lucie Uptmoor (born November 15, 1899 in Lohne ; † October 30, 1984 ibid), was a German painter .

Luzie Uptmoor was born as the daughter of the Lohner doctor Franz Uptmoor in Lohne and grew up there. After elementary school, she attended the Liebfrauenschule Oldenburg as a boarding school student , and later the girls' college in Hersel near Bonn . From 1917 to 1927 Luzie Uptmoor lived as a house daughter in her parents' household. There she met the artist Heinrich Klingenberg from Visbek , who she portrayed in 1910 and whom she portrayed in 1922.

In 1926, Luzie Uptmoor met the Düsseldorf painter and sculptor Peter Ludwigs , a member of the Young Rhineland district , in Lohne . This confirmed her desire to become a painter and enabled her to study art in Düsseldorf. Ludwigs taught the young artist and worked with her in the same studio. As early as October 1928, Luzie Uptmoor presented the first pictures in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf as part of an exhibition entitled “The Young Rhineland”.

In 1928, Luzie Uptmoor joined the “ Rheinische Sezession ” group and regularly took part in their exhibitions. From 1929 onwards the artist accompanied her mentor several times on longer trips. In the years 1934–1936, the first works by Luzie Uptmoor, which are still known today, were created (including "Landkind - Mädchen vorm Kornfeld" ). In 1937 and 1943 Peter Ludwigs was arrested. After his death in Gestapo custody , Luzie Uptmoor returned to Lohne.

In 1945 she met the British Major Colin Norris, an employee of the British military government in Oldenburg , later the district command in Vechta . Luzie Uptmoor's future husband helped her out of her life crisis after a creative crisis from 1946 to 1948 and the death of her father (1950) and mother (1952). From 1955 the artist lived with Norris in Normandy and Paris . However, she kept returning to Lohne to make portraits there, as the commissioned work in France alone was not enough to cover her livelihood. Shortly after Norris' death in 1984, Luzie Uptmoor also died while preparing an exhibition in the Old Town Hall.

During her life, Luzie Uptmoor took part in 21 group exhibitions and 10 solo exhibitions.

Art-historical classification

Landscapes, still lifes and portraits are Luzie Uptmoor's main subjects. These reflect a piece of regional history.

Luzie Uptmoor dealt intensively with Paula Modersohn-Becker (who saw the painter as her personal role model), Oskar Moll , Max Beckmann and Amedeo Modigliani , who shaped her style. Josef Giesen characterizes this style as “ late impressionistic ” with alienation effects in the lines and colors, which are typical of Expressionism .

Exactly this style became a problem in the period after the Second World War, as with many female painters of her generation: Luzie Uptmoor belongs to the "lost generation" of women painting whose careers were made impossible by National Socialism and the Second World War and who continued afterwards saw the war as still figurative and expressive artists rejected by their abstract painting male colleagues. In particular, the painting technique that predominated in the "Rhenish Secession", whose style Luzie Uptmoor felt obliged to, was replaced by the predominantly abstract techniques of the "New Rhenish Secession", which had come together in the Rhineland in 1949. From 1950, according to Giesen, Luzie Uptmoor's style was oriented towards the New Objectivity , in that her works took on a more sketchy character.

So it is not surprising that in 1955 an attempt by Luzie Uptmoor to get a studio space as an artist from the city property management in Düsseldorf failed.

As a result, Luzie Uptmoor and her work are still relatively unknown outside of the former state of Oldenburg . One of her works can be seen in the passage under the tower during the opening hours of the Church of St. Gertrud in Lohne: In a prayer niche on the left in front of the entrance to the interior of the church, there is her image of Mary from the "Perpetual Help".

The exhibition rooms of the “Friends of Luzie Uptmoor” with a permanent exhibition of the artist's works are located in an outbuilding of the Industrie Museum Lohne . The 22nd “ Frauenort ” in Lower Saxony was dedicated to Luzie Uptmoor on March 16, 2014.
