Lucienne Peiry

Lucienne Peiry (born September 4, 1961 in Lausanne ) is a Swiss art historian .

She is an expert on art brut , has curated several exhibitions and has published several authoritative books on the subject. Until 2011 she headed the Lausanne Collection de l'Art Brut ; today she serves this museum as research director and ambassador. She gives lectures in Switzerland and Europe and has also been Professor of Art brut at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) since 2010 and at the Université de Lausanne, faculté des sciences sociales et politiques (social and political sciences) since 2016.

Life

Lucienne Peiry grew up in simple circumstances in the Swiss canton of Friborg . Visits to museums were not common in the family. On a school trip to the Musée de l'Art Brut , she experienced, according to her own words, “une déflagration poétique”, a “poetic explosion”: She began to get enthusiastic about Art brut. She enrolled at the University of Lausanne as an art history student. She wrote a dissertation on Art brut under Michel Thévoz . In 1996 she became the first woman to do a doctorate in art history in Lausanne . Her dissertation was published in 1997 by Flammarion as a book ("L'Art Brut") and was translated into German in 2005 and into English in 2001 and 2006. In 2015 it was also published in Chinese.

From 1987 to 2001, Lucienne Peiry worked as a cultural journalist for Radio suisse romande . In 2001 she was appointed director of the Collection de l'Art Brut as the successor to Michel Thévoz . In this function, she traveled within Switzerland, to various European countries, but also to India, Japan, China, Benin and Bali to discover works and artists of the Art Brut.

She is the author of several books and articles on Art brut and has overseen several publications and exhibition catalogs for the museum in Lausanne. A. the book "Collection de l'Art Brut, Lausanne", Paris, Flammarion-Skira, 2012 (French, English and German).

On her initiative, the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne produced several films about Art Brut artists together with the director and journalist Philippe Lespinasse and the director Erika Manoni.

In 2001 she introduced an educational program she had developed at the Collection de l'Art Brut. These are mostly visits for the young public, workshops and publications.

In 2003 she organized the exhibition Louis Soutter et la Musique together with the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Musée cantonal des beaux-arts de Lausanne . Christian Zacharias , conductor at the Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne , participated in this project. She undertook other joint projects with the Lausanne Théâtre de Vidy , the Petit Théâtre and the Freiburg Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, among others .

In 2012, Lucienne Peiry gave up the position as director of the museum; instead, she became director of research and international relations. She represents the museum abroad and organizes exhibitions and conferences there. She conducts research around the world for artists and their work (Europe, Asia, Africa) and organizes relevant publications. Since 2014 she has also had a monthly artistic broadcast on RTS (Radio Télévision Suisse).

Lucienne Peiry has curated an exhibition on Armand Schulthess ' total work of art. This exhibition was presented for the first time in 2014 in Neuchâtel Center Dürrenmatt and in 2016 in Lugano ( Museo cantonale d'Arte ). Catalogs in three languages ​​were published for each exhibition.

In 2017, Lucienne Peiry is curator of the exhibition "Inextricabilia. Enchevêtrements magiques" at the La maison rouge art foundation in Paris, for which a catalog was also published. A year later she curated an exhibition on Curzio Di Giovanni in Lausanne (HEP), in which around 80 drawings were shown publicly for the first time, and the exhibition "Rhinocéros féroce?", Where she brings art and science together in dialogue. Drawn and painted rhinos by Gaston Dufour will be shown together with real stuffed rhinos (Musée cantonal de zoologie, Lausanne, 2019-2020).
