history

The founding of the publishing house is closely linked to Ernest Flammarion , the brother of the astronomer Camille Flammarion . Ernest published essays and albums by his brother, which were addressed to the general public. They achieved great sales success in the late 19th century.

In 1876 Ernest Flammarion founded the company Charles Marpon et Ernest Flammarion together with the Parisian bookseller Charles Marpon († 1890) . They bought the program of the publishing bookstore A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven et Cie in Brussels., In which Victor Hugo , Émile Zola and Jules Michelet published their works. One of the first successes was the illustrated edition of L'Assommoir , Der Totschläger , by Émile Zola, which they co- financed with the Librairie Charpentier . With the profits they financed L'Astronomie populaire by Camille Flammarion. This project set the course for the program for the next 20 years: popular science topics and advice. These included questionable publications. The anti-Semitic pamphlet La France Juive by Édouard Drumont found 62,000 buyers in its 1886 year of publication. It had been reissued more than 200 times by 1914. In 1887 the series Ouvrages utiles and in 1890 the series Bibliothèque Flammarion was published. It included works on history , anthropology and botany .

Literary works found a place in the Auteurs célèbres collection launched in 1889 . The new works by Hector Malot were published there; for a long time they achieved the highest sales figures. The authentic travel reports of Jean-Baptiste Charcot and Frederick Cook also appeared there . In 1902, Gustave Le Bon , who had been lured away from the Félix Alcan publishing house , founded the La Bibliothèque de Philosophie scientifique program series . In the same year Flammarion brought out a series of novels in pocket book format with illustrated covers at a price of 95 cents per copy. From 1905 to 1925 one celebrated success with the novels by Victor Margueritte , Maurice Genevoix , Henri Barbusse and Colette ; every now and then they could win a literary prize. In 1914 Max and Alex Fischer launched the Select Collection , the books of which appeared in octave format and which amounted to several hundred volumes. In 1992 the Bibliothèque des connaissances médicales collection was published , which later developed into the Flammarion Médecine program area.

From 1930 the albums of Père Castor appeared . They opened the youth book market for Flammarion. In January 1945, before the Commission d'Épuration , Charles and Armand Flammarion were accused of collaborating with the German occupation and symbolically punished with a one-month ban.

1958 the paperback publisher J'ai lu was founded; initially as a joint venture with the publishers Robert Laffont and Éditions du Seuil . In the 1960s, the publishers Garnier Frères and Flammarion jointly brought out the classic series Garnier-Flammarion ; later it was renamed GF Flammarion . In 1977 Flammarion bought the Arthaud publishing house.

In the 1990s, the bookstores Flammarion 4 were opened. In addition to books, they also offered design objects for small editions. In 1998 Raphaël Sorin published the novel Les Particules élémentaires by Michel Houellebecq . His novels have been translated worldwide. La Carte et le Territoire by Houellebecq was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 2010 .

Flammarion remained a family business until 2000: the founder Ernest Flammarion was followed by his son Charles in 1918. In 1967 Henri Flammarion became his heir; he was followed in 1985 by Charles-Henri Flammarion. Despite an IPO in June 1996, Charles-Henri Flammarion initially retained control of the company. The IPO resulted in proceeds of more than one billion francs , which corresponds to around 220 million euros.

In 2001 Flammarion's history as a family company ended: it was bought by the Italian RCS MediaGroup . In 2012, RCS MediaGroup sold Flammarion to Groupe Madrigall for 251 million euros .
