Victor Margueritte
Victor Margueritte (born December 1, 1866 in Blida , Algeria , † March 23, 1942 in Monestier , Allier department , France) was a French writer .
life and work
His father was General Jean-Auguste Margueritte (1823–1870), his brother the writer Paul Margueritte (1860–1918), with whom Victor Margueritte worked closely. He wrote various theater " charades " and created with his brother pantomime La peur .
Victor Margueritte has been campaigning for the social and political goals of the feminist movement since the turn of the century . With his novel La Garçonne from 1922 he created a heroine who became the epoch-defining symbol of female emancipation and sexual liberation of the twenties. It is the first part of a trilogy called La Femme en chemin . The book was so shocking that Margueritte was released from the Légion d'honneur . Shortly after the novel was published, the Belgian director Arman Du Plessy (1883–1924) made a film adaptation that was immediately banned by the censors. The novel has been translated into twelve languages and was one of the greatest book successes in the interwar period; In 1927 the number of copies sold had exceeded a million. The novel was widely discussed in the press by contemporary intellectuals. Paul Colin wrote in 1923 in Europe , one of the leading literary magazines of the time, that La Garçonne was a literary post-war event. In 1926 Margueritte reworked his novel for the theater. The play premiered on July 6th at the Théâtre de Paris . This was followed by film adaptations in 1936 and 1957.
