Blida ( Arabic البليدة, DMG al-Bulaida , tamazight ⵍⴻⴱⵍⵉⴸⴰ) is a city in northern Algeria with about 265,000 (2005) inhabitants. It is located in the province of the same name, Blida , of which it is the capital. Her name means small town . It is often referred to as the Ville des Roses (City of Roses).
Geographical location
The city is located about 40 km south of the Algerian capital Algiers at an altitude of around 260 m in the Mitidja, a wide valley of the Tell Atlas . The Mediterranean coast is around 30 km away. Immediately to the south of the city is an extensive mountain range with the 1,500 m high tourist town of Chréa and the Chréa National Park, a UNESCO- listed biosphere reserve, stretching south of it .
history
The Romans built a field camp on the site where the city is today. In 1535, Morisks , Muslim refugees from Andalusia , settled there and began to plant irrigated orange plantations. During the Ottoman period, Blida developed into a wealthy place to which the wealthy residents of Algiers withdrew. In 1825, Blida was destroyed by an earthquake. Thirteen years later, in 1838, it was captured by French troops who set up a garrison there. Only a few decades later, in 1867, Blida was destroyed again by an earthquake.
traffic
Blida is located on the National Road 1 coming from Algiers , also known as the Trans Sahara Highway , which turns south here towards Médéa and leads into the Gorges de la Chiffa (Chiffa gorge) through the Tell Atlas. It is located on the railway line from Algiers to Blida, opened in 1860, which was extended in 1890 with the railway line through the Gorges de la Chiffa to Berruaghia and later to Djelfa. The railway line from Oran to Algiers also runs via Blida. The east-west highway leads north past Blida. The Blida - Chréa cable car facilitates access to the place in the mountains.
