Douglas John Lucia (born March 17, 1963 in Plattsburgh , New York , USA ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Syracuse .

Life

Douglas Lucia entered the seminary in 1981 after graduating from high school . He first studied in Ogdensburg and from 1985 in East Aurora . On May 20, 1989, he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Ogdensburg through Bishop Stanislaus Joseph Brzana .

After ordination, he was initially active in parish pastoral care, including in Cornwall, Canada, and at Ogdensburg Cathedral. He studied canon law from 1997 to 1999 at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and obtained a licentiate in this subject . On his return he served as a prison chaplain for a year and then from 2000 to 2003 he was personal secretary to the bishop. From 2000 to 2017 he was vice-official of the diocese, from 2003 until his appointment as bishop he headed the pastoral care of the diocese of Ogdensburg and since 2005 he was also responsible for the diocese's candidates for priesthood. From 2004 to 2010 he was Episcopal Vicar for Diocesan Services and then until 2017 for divine services and priestly training. Since 2017 he has been the official of the diocese of Ogdensburg and pastor of the parishes of Saint Mary in Waddington and Saint John the Baptist in Madrid .

On June 4, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Syracuse. The Archbishop of New York , Cardinal Timothy Dolan , ordained him episcopal on August 8 of the same year . Co- consecrators were his predecessor Robert Cunningham and the Bishop of Ogdensburg, Terry Ronald LaValley .
