The German Glass Painting Museum in Linnich is the only museum of its kind in Germany. It shows both historical and contemporary exhibits , including works by Georg Meistermann and Otmar Alt . The museum also offers a glimpse into a glass painting workshop. Myriam Wierschowski, who holds a doctorate in art history, was the director until the end of 2018.

history

The museum was opened on November 29, 1997 by the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Johannes Rau .

The building in which the museum is located is a former water mill of the Duchy of Jülich from 1608. From 1847 the mill was operated by the Weitz family and shut down in 1966. The tall silo building was completely gutted in the 1990s, an annex was added, which was funded by the state's urban development funds, and finally opened to visitors on November 29, 1997 as a glass painting museum. The Linnicher Mühlenteich , a branch of the Rur , still rushes through under the museum.

The idea for a glass painting museum arose from the local, oldest German glass painting workshop, the Heinrich Oidtmann company , which left its extensive collection from the Middle Ages to modern times to the museum and the NRW Foundation as the basis.

Others

The museum is run by a foundation . Donors are the city of Linnich and the local company SIG Combibloc .

The museum has 1400 m² of exhibition space on six levels. On the ground floor there is a fully equipped workshop in which the entire creation of a glass painting can be shown.

Luzia Schlösser, who also heads the Nideggen Castle Museum, has been the director since January 1, 2019 .
