Jochem Poensgen

Jochem Poensgen (* 1931 in Düsseldorf ) is a German glass artist. He designs and designs glass windows in particular for church and public buildings.

Life

Jochem Poensgen came from the well-known Düsseldorf industrialist family Poensgen , which has its origins as the Reidemeister family in the Schleiden / Eifel area. He is the son of the industrialist Siegfried Poensgen (1893–1955) and Maria Krischer (1906–2004) and the nephew of the industrialist Helmuth Poensgen . From 1941 to 1951 he attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Düsseldorf . In 1951 Poensgen studied for one semester at the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal . Long study stays in France and Italy aroused his interest in architecture-related art, especially stained glass .

After participating in several competitions, Poensgen received his first order for the design of stained glass in 1956. Since then he has created numerous glass designs for churches, public buildings and private houses in Europe and the USA . He also created etchings , book graphics and illustrations in the 1970s and 1980s .

Lecturing activities and guest lectureships have taken him to Great Britain, Australia , New Zealand , Mexico , Canada and the USA. In 1984 he founded the 1st International Seminar for Architecture-Related Glass Painting in Kevelaer . From 1992 to 1999 he was Visiting Honorary Professor at the Swansea Institute (Faculty of Art & Design) in Swansea, Wales .

Poensgen has lived in Soest since 1991 , where he also moved his studio in 1998 .
