The City History Museum is a museum of the city of Jülich in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located in the Hexenturm , a medieval city gate .

In 1899, the district court and judicial prison moved out of the tower. Jülich alderman Peter Linnartz (1854–1918) campaigned for a reconstruction as a local museum . The diocesan master builder Heinrich Renard planned the building project. It cost 6,284.98 marks and was raised through grants and donations.

On August 8, 1902, Mayor Wilhelm Vogt opened the “Municipal Collection for Local Lore”. At that time there were already around 400 exhibits on display. In 1918 the collection had grown to 1,463 pieces. These included pictures, engravings, archaeological finds, coins, glasses, weapons and much more.

In the First World War, the activities fell asleep with the death of Linnartz. The French occupying powers took some of the exhibits back home.

With the founding of the Jülich History Association on July 4, 1923, new activities emerged. In 1937 there were again 3,127 exhibits. The witch tower was badly damaged in the Second World War . Many pieces were burned or damaged.

After extensive renovation after the war, the foundation stone for the attached cultural center was laid on March 23, 1990. The extension was opened in 1992.

In 2001, the collection of the traditional association of the former NCO School in Jülich was taken over and taken over into the museum inventory, which now comprises 8,500 parts.
