The Warszawa – Katowice (Warsaw – Katowice) railway is a double-track, electrified railway line in the Polish Masovian , Łódź and Silesia voivodeships . Historically, most of the line, Warsaw - Dombrowa , formed most of the Warsaw-Vienna railway .

course

The route begins in Warsaw West Railway Station ( Warsaw West ) and runs southwest through the stations of the district towns Pruszkow (km 15.891), Grodzisk Mazowiecki (km 29,548) - maintenance of some long-distance trains and the beginning of the Central Railway Mainline Grodzisk Mazowiecki-Zawiercie , a high-speed line - Żyrardów ( km 43.141; long-distance traffic stop) after the train station in the independent town of Skierniewice (long-distance traffic stop; km 65.929) - the beginning of the Skierniewice – Łowicz railway and the Skierniewice – Łuków railway, which is now only used for freight traffic . The route continues southwards via Rogów (km 95.723) - the beginning of the museum narrow-gauge railway Rogoów – Biała Rawska - after the long-distance Koluszki stop (km 105.194) - the end point of the railway line Łódź – Koluszki and thus part of the Warsaw – Łódź connection, a little south of it crossed the Łódź – Dębica line . Next long-distance train station Piotrków (km 144.242) - Beginning of the operated only in freight railway Piotrków-Bialy Lug and the disused narrow gauge railway Piotrków-Sulejów - then Radomsko (km 189.133), then Częstochowa (km 229.745). To the north of it, at the junction (podg) Wyczerpy , the Wyczerpy – Chorzew Siemkowice railway line , which is no longer regularly used by passengers, begins . The Kielce – Fosowskie railway crosses south of the station . The next long-distance train station is Myszków (km 261.016), then Zawiercie (km 274.227) - the end point of the Central Railway Main Line and the Tarnowskie Góry – Zawiercie railway, which is only partially used for freight traffic . Long-distance train stations in the following Upper Silesian industrial area are: Dąbrowa Górnicza , Będzin , Sosnowiec Główny and Katowice , where the line ends.

State of development

The line is double-tracked and electrified.

For passenger trains, the maximum speed to Koluszki is largely 140 to 160 km / h, to Częstochowa continuously 120 km / h, to Poraj 100 km / h, to Dąbrowa Górnicza 120 km / h and to Katowice Zawodzie largely 100 to 110 km / h, up to Katowice still 70 to 90 km / h. For freight trains it is mostly 120 km / h to Skierniewice, 100 km / h to Częstochowa, and mostly 80 km / h to Katowice.

history

Early on, in the 1830s, a line was planned between Warsaw and the Austrian border, albeit initially as a horse-drawn tram. A consortium to build a steam train went bankrupt during construction in 1842, partly because the estimated cost was based on the infrastructure for horse-drawn trains. The building was then taken over by the Russian-Congress Polish state, and the first section from Warsaw to Pruszków was opened in 1845. In June 1845 the line to Grodzisk Mazowiecki was opened, in September to Żyrardów , in October to Skierniewice , in November to Koluszki . The line to Piotrków Trybunalski was opened in October of the following year, and to Częstochowa in December . In December of the following year to Dąbrowa Górnicza Ząbkowice. The Warsaw-Vienna railway goes over to the Dąbrowa Górnicza Ząbkowice – Kraków line . The remainder of today's Warsaw – Kattowitz railway, Dąbrowa Górnicza Ząbkowice – Kattowitz, was finally in August 1859, to Sosnowiec from the Warsaw – Vienna railway, Sosnowiec – border – Kattowitz from the Upper Silesian railway . In 1857 the state had leased the line for 75 years, but in 1912 the state bought the leasing company. During the lease years, the line was expanded to two tracks.

After the First World War , the entire route became Polish. In December 1936 the electrical operation from Warsaw to Pruszków was opened, in May 1937 to Grodzisk Mazowiecki, in September to Żyrardów.

Only after the Second World War was the line electrified further, namely in June 1953 to Skierniewice, in April 1954 to Rogów , in January 1955 to Koluszki, in January 1956 to Częstochowa, in May to Zawiercie , in June to Łazy and finally in June 1957 to Katowice. In May 1959 the line between Warsaw and Grodzisk was expanded to four tracks. In 1962 the Piotrków Trybunalski railway accident occurred .

The line has been renovated and expanded since 2006, even if the fastest traffic from Warsaw to Upper Silesia is via the Grodzisk Mazowiecki – Zawiercie high-speed line .
