The Katowice Railway is the largest and most important railway station the Polish city of Katowice ( Katowice ). It is also the largest and most important train station in the Upper Silesian industrial area and one of the largest railway hubs in Poland .

The old train station

Old train station 1859–1972

The old station was built in 1859 and expanded several times. The building is some distance from today's train station. The building has been a listed building since 1975. The current condition of the building is relatively poor.

Buildings 1972–2011

The decision to build a new station in Katowice was made at the end of the 1950s, as the old station no longer met the demands of the growing industrial city. The 1959 competition was won by the three Warsaw architects Wacław Kłyszewski, Jerzy Mokrzyński and Eugeniusz Wierzbicki, known as Tygrysy ("Tiger"). As the first construction phase, an entrance hall for a pedestrian underpass was built in 1964 to the south of the tracks. Large parts of a Wilhelminian era block were demolished for the construction of the reception building on the other side of the tracks . The station was completed in 1972. The 140 meter long and 53 meter wide hall consisted of two rows of eight reinforced concrete pillars each in mushroom or chalice shape: a thin-walled roof structure influenced by the buildings of the Spanish architect Félix Candela , which was only realized a few times worldwide. Both parts of the roof were connected by a long ribbon of windows. The bus station was built in front of the train station, from which a long flight of stairs - over the lanes - leads directly to the mezzanine floor of the station, which is drawn between the pillars.

In 2008, the Spanish investor Neinver and the architectural office Sud Architectes were commissioned with the extensive renovation of the train station and the construction of a new Galeria Katowicka shopping center . The old station concourse should be renovated and preserved. Based on an expert opinion by the investor, according to which the concrete goblets were no longer stable, it was initially decided to demolish the station and restore the concrete goblets. This decision and the design by Sud Architectes in general met with fierce opposition, in which, among other things, counter-reports were drawn up by Politechnika Śląska , and architects from home and abroad as well as Katowice citizens protested in various actions against the demolition of the station hall. The station concourse was completely demolished in January 2011, including the chalices.

The building was considered one of the best examples of brutalism in Poland. The station building had an enclosed space of 76,314 m³ and could accommodate up to 25,000 people.

Building since 2012

The new reception hall was put into operation on October 29, 2012.
