Szopienice ( German  Schoppinitz ) is a district of Katowice in Poland . It is located on the Rawa River , around eight kilometers east of the city center.

character

This district is strongly characterized by heavy industry. There are also iron and heavy metal smelters here.

history

In 1360, the Duke of Racibórz , Mikołaj II, confirmed the ownership of the neighboring villages of Szopienice and Roździeń to Ottokar von Pilica . In 1430 Szopienice was destroyed during the Hussite Wars (1419 to 1436) and remained uninhabited until the 16th century .

In 1546 one of the first large iron smiths in the area was established in Roździeń ; from there came one of the first textbooks on blacksmithing , the book published in 1612 by the Silesian iron caster and blacksmith Walenty Roździeński in Krakow : “Oficcina ferraria abo hutá i warstat z kuźniami szlachetnego dzieła żelaznego” , (“Oficcina ferraria or smithy and smithy” Workshop of the noble iron craft ”). Around 1570 the village of Szopienice was also repopulated. At that time, the two villages of Szopienice and Roździeń belonged to the Salaman family from Mysłowice, who was related to the Archbishop of Kraków . This is one of the reasons why the spread of the Reformation is prevented. In 1784 the population of Szopienice was 79 people.

In 1834 the owners of the mining company Giesches Erben founded the zinc smelter Wilhelmina .

In 1898, Szopienice and Mysłowice were connected by a S-Bahn line. In 1912 the Uthemann zinc smelter is founded.

In 1921, Szopienice became the headquarters of the civil and military administration of Wojciech Korfanty in the 3rd Silesian Uprising.

During the Nazi era , Szopienice and Roździeń were merged into Katowice-Roździeń-Szopienice in 1934, and a forced labor camp for male Jews was opened on October 9, 1942. Until November 1943, deported Jews had to work on track construction and in a zinc factory, sometimes until they died.

After the Second World War in 1951, Szopienice was granted city rights, after which it was incorporated into the city of Katowice as a district in 1960.
