Pilica [ pʲiˈliʦa ] (formerly also Pilcza , German: Pilitza , older also Pillen ) is a town on the Pilica with about 2,000 inhabitants (June 30, 2014) in Poland . It is located 21 kilometers east of the district town of Zawiercie on the edge of the limestone region of the High Jura and the granite rocks of the eagle nests . Pilica belongs to the powiat Zawierciański , Silesian Voivodeship and is the seat of the urban and rural municipality of the same name.
history
The first mention of Pilica comes from 1228. In 1398 it was granted city rights as a private town in the Lelów district of the Kraków Voivodeship .
In 1795 the city came to the Kingdom of Prussia as the seat of one of the two districts of New Silesia . At that time it had 2,129 inhabitants. Between 1807 and 1815, Pilica belonged to the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1808 was elevated to the status of a county seat. After 1815, Pilica was part of Congress Poland . After the Republic of Krakow was spun off from the Krakow Voivodeship, Pilica was considered as a candidate for the voivodeship's new capital, but lost to Kielce . In 1830 the powiat Pilica was abolished and in 1869 Pilica lost its town charter. In 1857, Pilica became the seat of an Evangelical Augsburg branch of Petrikau (from 1876 from Kielce) when there were 26 Evangelical families (157 people) in the city.
Pilica has been a town again since 1994.
