history

Palace in Szczekociny

The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1307. The town received the town charter in the first half of the 15th century. On June 6, 1794, a battle of the same name occurred nearby during the Kościuszko Uprising . Like many small Polish towns, the town lost its town charter in 1870, but was regained in 1923. With the administrative reform of 1999, the place became part of the Silesian Voivodeship, although Szczekociny had never belonged to Silesia before and does not share its history. On March 3, 2012, a serious railway accident occurred here , in which 16 people were killed and 59 injured.

Jews

In 1937, 3,018 Jews lived in Szczekociny and thus made up more than half of the local population. 1500 were deported to the Treblinka extermination camp in 1942. Leon Zelman (1928–2007) survived and reports in his biography "A life after survival" (Verlag Kremayr & Scheria Wien, 1995) a. a. also about his childhood in the Szczekociny Stetl. An exchange program has started between the current citizens of Szczekociny and Jews from Israel and other countries, which mainly involves young people.
